Applications
BEFORE YOU APP
Please check the taken and drop list before submitting your application. A character cannot be apped until the drop comment is cleared from the drop post, as some death-drops require a wait time.
LIMITATIONS ON CHARACTERS
While The Unrivaled is a panfandom game, there are a few limits on who can be apped:
- Canon characters from pretty much anything fictional are accepted: movies, TV, anime, manga, comics, video games, visual novels, books, theatrical performances, etc. All canon characters must have enough canon personality and background to fill out the app without significant quantities of headcanon.
- OCs are accepted from their own original universes (see special app for details)
- CRAU from a single game is acceptable, but CRAUs cannot stack from multiple games. There may be limits on powers, items, and animals brought in from other games.
- Fandom OCs are not accepted at this time, though this may be lifted if enough requests are made. This includes native OCs – there are already hundreds of canon characters from the setting to app.
- Animals and anthropomorphic characters must be sentient, sapient, and capable of human communication.
- Duplicates of the same character are not allowed, but characters sharing the same name but from a completely different source are allowed. The canons must be significantly different from one another. Example: Oda Nobunaga from Sengoku Basara is very different from Oda Nobunaga from Samurai Warriors/Sengoku Musou, however, Nobunaga from Pokemon Conquest is the same one from Sengoku Musou. The first two are allowed at the same time, but the last two are not. If you feel your character is significantly different from one already in game without being a direct copy, you are free to app and explain your case.
- Historical figures are totally acceptable if a) the person is no longer living, and b) the source is fictional. After all, we wouldn't be able to have an Orochi game if we didn't allow historical Chinese and Japanese warlords.
- all canons must have an English translation (official or fan) so that the mods can quickly review the source to approve apps.
- Spoiler policy: there is a wait time of 2 months from the moment a source has its English debut to app characters from it. If apping a spoilerific character, we request that you respect players' wish not to be spoiled and use a permissions/opt-out post and mark spoiler content in posts if playing immediately from the source.
- there is no age limit for characters to be apped, but consider suitability before bringing in children under the age of 12. The setting contains elements of war, survivalism, and demonic magic. If your character doesn't have a personality that will drive them to survive in a demon dimension with lots of fighting, consider whether they are suitable for the setting.
Warriors Orochi characters off-limits: Orochi, Orochi X, Kiyomori, and Kaguya. All others are open if not taken yet.
HOW TO APPLY
Copy the appropriate form below - canon or OC. Fill it out either in your own character journal or in the comments. Post either a link to the app in your journal or post the app in full in the comments below.
Post using the character journal you intend to use in the game. Put the character name and canon (or "OC") in the subject line. Post the app however you like after that. Please do not use fancy coding for the app if you post it in the comments - the mods need to be able to quickly and concisely read.
There are no reserves and apps are currently always open, so jump right in!
APPLICATION
PLAYER INFORMATION
⇒ Name: The handle you want to go by in the game.
⇒ Journal: if you have one, otherwise the character journal is fine
⇒ Age: Self-explanatory.
⇒ Contact: Any channels through which you wish to be contacted. Plurk, Discord, email, PMs, etc
⇒ Characters Played: If applicable
CHARACTER INFORMATION
⇒ Name: List in whatever style is appropriate for the canon, Western or Eastern. If there is no canon name, like the first names of the Wardens in Dragon Age: Origins, note this when choosing one. If there are multiple accepted names (such as Yu Narukami/Souji Seta from Persona 4) choose whatever you're comfortable with.
⇒ Age: Self-explanatory.
⇒ Canon: name, also what medium if there are multiple versions (anime vs manga, book vs movie, etc). Mixing canon sources is not allowed.
⇒ Canon Reference: A link to a wiki will do. If there's not very much available, you are welcome to write something out instead. Canon must have an English version (fansubs/translations are acceptable, as long as you were not the primary translator for them).
⇒ Canon Point: The chapter/episode/book that your character will be brought from.
⇒ Personality: Can be either a bullet-point list with examples or an essay, we don't care. Whatever is more comfortable and concise.
We'd like to see their motivations, fears, strengths, weaknesses. What is their driving force? What would make them suffer? We'd also like to see their closest relationships within canon discussed. You don't have to touch upon every single one, especially if they're a main character, but certainly discuss the people who have shaped them the most.
For characters who are coming in with previous game history, we want canon personality ONLY for this section. Any changes to this must be detailed in the next section.
⇒ Previous game history: If this doesn't apply, disregard this section. If you are bringing in a character from another game, explain any changes in personality that they have undergone while in their previous RP setting, and any major events that shaped their character and perception. If your character was in a game where they picked up any other powers or items, we will need to know about it in this section as well.
⇒ Powers and Abilities: Please discuss canon powers and abilities in a format that someone who is canon-blind can understand them. For example, instead of listing a Koei character's musou abilities, explain how their attacks work, such as Cao Pi's ability to augment his physical attacks with ice. Beyond magical abilities and other powers, we're also looking for physical abilities. If your character is trained in swordplay, tell us. If they're quick on their feet, can pick locks, cook well – anything that you think is unique and worth mentioning. If your character has no way to defend themselves in the setting at all, make a note of that as well.
⇒ Personal Effects: Anything that your character is bringing into the game, including and especially weapons. Aside from vehicles, everything they bring in must be able to be carried on their person – no backpacks full of Phoenix Downs. All items are subject to mod approval, so if they have any magical properties please list those here as well. Small pets and vehicles are permitted, but must be approved with your app. Pokemon are limited to 3 per trainer.
WRITTEN SAMPLE
⇒ We only require one writing sample. There are a variety of options to choose from here, as long as the sample meets the requirements:
- Test drive thread from our own TDM, must be over 10 comments from you.
- previous game thread, so long as the thread was written within the prior 6 months. Must be over 10 comments from you.
- a "first person" action-style post, as if using the mirror to communicate. Minimum of 7-10 sentences, including actions/background information on setting and character. Can be prose with quotation marks or actionspam in brackets.
- a "third person" style passage of writing, can be prose or in brackets but most commonly we see prose. At least two paragraphs, showing both action and introspection.
If you're hard up for sample ideas, you can select one of the prompts from the test drive meme to use in your application without needing to thread it out, or you may come up with your own ideas.
If the app team can't see the voice clearly in the thread or sample, we will ask for revisions, and you may be required to present a different sample entirely.
Original Characters must follow all the same rules, generally, as canon characters in terms of powers, items, limitations, etc. We must have background and history for OCs, and their abilities/items must not violate their own "canon" rules - example, a character from a non-magical setting cannot have magical weapons in their inventory.

⇒ Age: Self-explanatory.
⇒ Appearance: We need to know what they look like. If you have art or a PB, linking is fine, otherwise describe them for us.
⇒ Brief Worldbuild: What is their world like? What are they accustomed to/what would they find strange? Keep it short, we don't need an essay on your worldbuild but we do need enough for some background.
⇒ History: What is the character's backstory? Can be bullet points/timeline or written out.
⇒ Personality: Can be either a bullet-point list with examples or an essay, we don't care. Whatever is more comfortable and concise.
